Rising Juniors and Seniors: Your August Checklist Is Here!

For high school juniors and seniors, August is the month to get a head start—because once school hits full swing, things move fast. From testing to applications to keeping grades up, there’s a lot to juggle. But with the right plan, you can stay ahead (and sane).

Here’s what your teen can start doing now:

Rising Juniors:

  • Create a testing timeline for the SAT/ACT

  • Begin exploring colleges and majors

  • Start a resume of extracurriculars, internships, and leadership roles

  • Identify areas for academic support before the semester starts

  • Tour college campuses (yes, in person if possible!)

  • Strengthen time management and study habits

Rising Seniors:

  • Finalize your college list

  • Tour campuses and attend info sessions (virtually or in person)

  • Draft and revise college essays (get feedback early!)

  • Submit applications early where possible—especially for rolling admissions

  • Secure housing early if planning to live on campus

  • Line up teacher recommendation letters

  • Keep grades strong—senior year still counts!

The Takeaway

A little planning in August makes fall way less overwhelming. The sooner your student starts, the more confident—and competitive—they’ll be.
