Why Clubs, Sports, and Activities Matter More Than Parents Think
Extracurricular activities are often treated like the sprinkles on top of a child’s education. Nice, colorful, occasionally chaotic, but not essential.
We see it differently.
Clubs, sports, arts, service, debate, theater, robotics, student government, music, and faith or community groups can play a powerful role in a child’s overall wellbeing. They give students something school alone does not always provide: identity, belonging, purpose, and a place to feel capable.
Why Activities Help Students Thrive
A child who struggles in math may feel brilliant on the soccer field.
A quiet student may find their voice in theater.
A perfectionist may learn resilience through a team sport.
A student who feels socially uncertain may find their people in robotics, art club, or community service.
These moments matter because children are not just building transcripts. They are building a sense of self.
The Education Connection
Extracurriculars can strengthen the exact skills students need in school:
Time management
Responsibility
Collaboration
Leadership
Emotional regulation
Persistence
Communication
Goal-setting
Confidence after mistakes
A student who learns to show up for practice, prepare for a performance, manage a club role, or contribute to a team is practicing the same executive-function muscles needed for school. Different outfit, same brain.
Do Not Overload the Schedule
The goal is not to create a résumé so packed your child needs a personal assistant by age 14.
One or two meaningful activities are often better than five scattered ones.
Look for activities that give your child:
A sense of belonging
A healthy adult mentor
A chance to build skill over time
Room to struggle and improve
Joy, purpose, or healthy challenge
If every activity creates tears, exhaustion, or constant family conflict, the schedule may need adjusting.
At Rise Above, we help students manage busy schedules while staying academically grounded. For athletes, artists, performers, and highly involved students, support often means planning ahead, using small windows well, and learning how to balance ambition with wellbeing.
