Sleep Is the School Supply Everyone Forgets
There is one back-to-school supply that will never show up on the Target list. Sleep.
No glitter folder. No fresh pencils. No adorable lunchbox. Just the deeply unglamorous thing that makes almost everything else work better.
When students are tired, school feels harder. Focus drops. Patience shrinks. Reading comprehension gets weaker. Math mistakes increase. Emotional regulation becomes more fragile. Homework that should take 25 minutes somehow becomes a two-hour family hostage situation.
Why August Sleep Matters
The transition from summer sleep to school sleep is not instant.
If a child has been staying up late and waking up late, their body needs time to shift. Waiting until the night before school starts is technically an option, but not one we would recommend unless your family enjoys chaos with a side of cereal.
The 15-Minute Reset
Start small.
Move bedtime and wake-up time earlier by 15 minutes every few nights until your child is closer to their school-year schedule.
This is much more realistic than announcing, “Everyone is going to bed at 8:30 now,” and watching your child stare at the ceiling like a tiny Victorian ghost.
Protect the Final 30 Minutes
The last 30 minutes before bed should be as boring as possible.
That is a compliment. Try:
No homework emergencies
No grade portal checking
No intense conversations
No phone scrolling
No “Wait, I forgot I need poster board” surprises
Keep the routine simple: shower, pajamas, reading, lights out.
Create a Morning Launch Pad
Better mornings start the night before.
Have your child prepare:
Backpack
Charged device
Water bottle
Clothes
Sports gear
This lowers the morning scramble and helps students begin the day with more control. At Rise Above, we often see students make better progress when their routines support their brains. If mornings, homework, or evening routines tend to spiral in your house, we can help your child build systems that actually fit their life.
