The First Two Weeks of school Set the Tone
The first two weeks of school are not about having everything figured out.
They are about watching carefully.
This is the moment when parents can notice how their child is entering the year: confident or cautious, organized or scattered, excited or quietly overwhelmed. The early weeks give us important clues before small problems become full-blown October chaos — which, as we all know, loves to arrive wearing a backpack. 🎒
What to Watch For
Pay attention to patterns, not one bad afternoon.
A few helpful questions:
Is your child writing down assignments clearly?
Do they know where to find homework online?
Are they starting work independently, or waiting until someone rescues them?
Are they coming home exhausted, irritable, or unusually avoidant?
Do they understand what each teacher expects?
The goal is not to hover. The goal is to catch friction early.
The “Friday Reset” Routine
One of the most useful habits families can build in August is a simple Friday reset.
Take 10–15 minutes at the end of each week to review:
What went well this week?
What felt harder than expected?
What assignments, tests, or projects are coming up?
What needs to be cleaned out, printed, emailed, or clarified?
What is one thing we can make easier next week?
This works because students often do not need a lecture. They need a system.
Why This Matters
The students who start strong are not always the ones who love school the most. Often, they are the ones who have the clearest routines.
At Rise Above, we use the beginning of the school year to help students build momentum before they fall into old patterns. That may mean strengthening organization, refreshing academic skills, planning for heavier coursework, or simply giving a child a trusted mentor who can help them feel grounded.
August is the best time to be proactive.
Not panicked. Not intense. Just intentional.
